Sand and water
play holds a magnetic attraction for children. Toys for sand and water play
should be made of sturdy, smoothly finished plastic or vinyl. Outdoor toys should
be weatherproof and toys which hold water should be easy to drain.
Dabbling in water is both amusing and very soothing. While they are having fun
with water, children are learning about its properties, simple concepts of volume
and capacity, empty and full, floating and sinking. Children enjoy water in
many forms: pouring, sprinkling, filling, pumping, spraying, mixing, and blowing
bubbles.
Lawn sprinklers are a fun way to cool off on hot summer days. Use only on the
grass and make sure the surrounding area is free of debris and obstructions
that could hurt bare feet. Instruct children how to use sprinkler toys safely,
and always follow the manufacturer's safety precautions. This is particularly
important with backyard water slides. Since children actually launch themselves
onto these slides in a prone position, a soft, grassy location free of bumps,
and well away from trees and shrubbery is essential. These slides are made to
be slippery, so children should not attempt to walk on them.
Sand can be sifted, moulded, poured, and excavated. Most toys end up in the
sandbox sooner or later, attesting to the popularity of this fascinating medium.
Check sandboxes every spring to make sure they are in good repair, with no protruding
nails or splintered wood. If cats roam free in your neighbourhood, a sandbox
cover is recommended.
